Kids’ shoes for babies, toddlers and older children

Kids’ shoes are not all the same. Children’s needs change quickly as they grow and start using their feet in new ways. Here you’ll find shoes for children of different ages – from the first soft baby shoes and starter shoes for little feet learning to balance, to sneakers, sandals, boots and more durable shoes for school, play and active everyday life.

When choosing kids’ shoes, it makes sense to consider your child’s age, how often the shoes will be worn and which season they need to work for. Babies usually do best in soft, flexible shoes, while toddlers often benefit from light support, good freedom of movement and a sole with better grip. For older children, it is often about finding shoes that feel comfortable, fit well and can handle many hours at nursery, school and on the playground.

If you are looking for shoes for those first steps, you can also explore our selection of starter shoes, where the focus is on flexibility and a fit that supports little feet as they develop.

Which kids’ shoes are right for the season and purpose?

Kids’ shoes should first and foremost suit the life they are used in. That’s why it helps to think about the time of year, and whether the shoes are for daycare, school, trips out or simply everyday use indoors and outdoors. On warm days, many families choose lightweight sandals and open shoes that let the feet breathe. In spring and autumn, sneakers and other closed shoes are often a good choice because they are easy, versatile and great for active play. When the weather turns rainy, cold or slushy, boots or wellies are usually the most practical option.

A simple way to think about it is:

  • For warm days: sandals and lightweight shoes with good airflow.
  • For everyday wear: sneakers for children who need to run, play and stay on the move.
  • For rain and mud: wellies with good grip and easy cleaning.
  • For cold weather: warm winter boots or other boots with extra protection.

If your child also needs something to wear indoors, it can be helpful to separate outdoor shoes from slippers, so their feet get the right support and comfort in both situations.

Fit makes a big difference in kids’ shoes

A good fit matters a lot when choosing shoes for children. Feet grow quickly, and shoes should neither feel tight nor sit so loosely that the foot slides around. It is a good idea to allow a little extra room in front of the toes – often around 1 cm – so the child can move the foot naturally while still having space to grow.

It is also worth looking at the width and shape of the shoe. Some children have narrow feet, while others need more room at the front. Velcro, elastic or adjustable straps can make everyday life a little easier here. They make the shoes easier to put on and take off and help them sit better on the foot.

For the youngest children, a soft and flexible sole is often the best choice, as it makes it easier for the child to feel the ground and use their feet freely. As children get older and wear shoes for many hours at a time, a more robust sole and a little extra stability can be an advantage.

Materials, comfort and durability in shoes for children

The material has a big impact on how the shoe feels on the foot and how well it copes with everyday wear. Leather is a popular choice because it is soft, durable and comfortable close to the foot. Mesh and other lightweight textiles are well suited to sneakers and light shoes where breathability is important. For wet days, rubber and water-repellent materials are practical – especially if your child usually finds the deepest puddle on the way.

In practice, comfort is about more than a soft shoe. The shoe also needs to work when it is worn again and again. That is why many parents look for:

  • flexible soles for natural movement
  • good grip on slippery or wet surfaces
  • materials that are easy to wipe down or clean
  • adjustable fastenings that make the shoe easy to adapt
  • reflective details or visible elements for the darker months

On rainy days, it often makes extra sense to combine the shoes with practical rainwear, so your child is dressed for outdoor play from head to toe.

Make it easier to choose the right kids’ shoes

If you are unsure which kids’ shoes are the best choice, it can help to start with the basics: How old is your child? What will the shoes be used for? And what kind of weather do they need to handle? This makes it easier to navigate between baby shoes, sneakers for toddlers, sandals for summer and boots for the colder months.

For children who are always on the move, shoes that can handle a bit of everything and have a sole with good grip are often a smart choice. For growing children, adjustable styles can be helpful because they are easier to adapt to the foot. And for the very youngest, lightweight and flexible shoes are usually the most natural option, as everything is still new when you have only just learned to stand and walk.

At House of Kids, our selection of kids’ shoes is chosen with a focus on comfort, function and materials that make sense in children’s everyday lives. This makes it easier to find shoes that feel good to wear and work in practice – whether you are looking for shoes for daycare, school, special occasions or outdoor play.
