Sleep time

Sleep time for babies and children: pyjamas, nightwear and sleeping bags for calm nights

Sleep time is all about the nightwear your child feels comfortable in night after night – from the first baby sleeping bag to pyjamas and nightwear for older children. What often makes the difference is your child’s age, the room temperature, and whether they sleep best with a gently enclosed feeling or need more freedom to turn and move. For the youngest children, many parents choose a sleeping bag, as it can create a calm feeling around the body, while pyjama sets and nightwear often become a better choice once the child is more active and wants to move freely.

Here you will find nightwear for both warm and cooler nights, making it easier to choose based on season, material and fit. For many parents, it also matters that nightwear feels soft against the skin, is easy to take on and off, and stays looking good even after frequent washing. After all, it is part of everyday life and needs to work again and again.

What is best for sleep time: a sleeping bag or pyjamas?

Whether a sleeping bag or pyjamas makes the most sense depends especially on your child’s age and how they sleep. For babies aged 0–2 years, many parents choose a sleeping bag because it stays nicely in place around the body and can create a secure frame for sleep. It also makes it easier to avoid the duvet being kicked completely off during the night.

For toddlers and older children, pyjamas are often the most obvious choice. A pyjama set with a top and trousers gives good freedom of movement, both while your child sleeps and when the morning begins slowly with a little play or cuddling. Some parents also prefer sleepsuits for younger children because they keep them cosy and stay in place as they should. You can also find soft everyday options in our selection of classic nightwear and underwear.

As a rule of thumb, it makes sense to choose:

  • a sleeping bag for babies who need a calmer, more all-in-one solution
  • pyjamas for children who move more and can adjust their own position in bed
  • lighter nightwear for warm nights and warmer qualities for the colder part of the year

Nightwear materials make a big difference to comfort

The material matters a lot when your child needs to sleep well and undisturbed. Cotton is a popular choice because it is soft, breathable and comfortable against the skin. It works well for everyday use, where nightwear should be easy to wear, easy to wash and pleasant to sleep in.

Bamboo viscose is often chosen when the most important thing is an extra-soft feel, or if your child has sensitive skin. It has a smooth, lightweight feel that many children enjoy, especially if they tend to get warm quickly during the night. In the colder months, flannel or other warmer qualities can be lovely, as they add a little extra warmth without feeling heavy.

Many parents also look for certifications such as OEKO-TEX or GOTS when choosing children’s pyjamas or baby pyjamas. This can offer extra peace of mind when clothing is worn close to the skin for many hours at a time – especially for the youngest children.

How to choose the right size and fit for children’s nightwear

Nightwear should fit comfortably and allow room for movement without becoming too loose. If it is too small, it can disturb sleep. If it is far too big, it can feel impractical, especially for young children who wriggle around in bed or walk around in the morning. If your child is between two sizes, many parents choose a little extra room so the fit still feels comfortable and there is space to grow.

At bedtime, it is often the small details that make everyday life easier:

  • soft cuffs that help keep the nightwear in place
  • a zip or fastening that makes nappy changes and dressing easier
  • anti-slip soles for toddlers who walk around in the morning

For the youngest children, a soft bodysuit under nightwear can be a good extra layering solution on cooler days. If your child easily gets cold feet, a pair of non-slip socks can be comfortable for slow mornings and little trips across the floor.

Sleep time follows the season, temperature and your child’s routine

The right nightwear is not only about size, but also about when during the year it will be used. Summer pyjamas in thin cotton are often comfortable on warm nights, while winter pyjamas in slightly warmer materials can provide more comfort when the temperature drops. This helps your child maintain a pleasant temperature throughout the night.

If your child often kicks off the duvet, a sleeping bag or a warm sleepsuit may be a better choice than a light pyjama set. If, on the other hand, your child gets warm quickly, thin and breathable nightwear will often work best. For the full sleep setup, it can also be helpful to look at soft bedding and layers that suit the season.

Sleepwear should first and foremost fit into your child’s everyday routine and feel good to wear as the day winds down. That is why, at House of Kids, we focus on nightwear and pyjamas with good comfort, practical fits and materials that stay soft night after night. This makes it easier to find something that suits your child’s very own sleep time.
