Sunglasses
Sunglasses for kids should first and foremost protect their eyes from the sun, but they also need to feel comfortable and withstand everyday life filled with play and movement. Here you will find children’s sunglasses for babies, toddlers and older kids, making it easier to choose a style that suits your child’s age, face shape and the way they will use them.
When choosing sunglasses for your child, UV protection, size and comfort are especially important to consider. Dark lenses alone are not enough. Sunglasses for kids should offer 100% UV protection, often marked as UV400, so their eyes are protected against both UVA and UVB rays. At the same time, lightweight materials and a good fit make a big difference – especially when the sunglasses are going to the playground, in the pram, on bike rides or packed for a holiday.
In our selection, you will find baby sunglasses in soft, flexible materials as well as styles for older children who like to have a say in choosing something they actually want to wear.
Fit is often what determines whether the sunglasses will actually be worn. If they slide down the nose or pinch behind the ears, they will quickly come off again. That is why age is a good place to start when looking for the right pair.
For the youngest children, around 0–2 years, baby sunglasses are often made from soft, flexible materials and may have a strap to help keep them in place. For children aged around 3–6 years, lightweight and bendable frames are often a good choice, as they suit an active everyday life with plenty of play and movement. From around 7 years and up, many children also choose with their eyes, and both sporty designs and more classic shapes can be a great match.
If your child is very active, it can be a good idea to look for sunglasses with a flexible frame and lightweight lenses, so they do not feel heavy during play. For beach days and holidays, it also makes sense to combine sunglasses with UV swimwear and a good sun hat, so your child is better protected in the sun.
Many parents are unsure what to look for. UV protection is the most important factor. Children’s sunglasses should be clearly labelled with UV400 or equivalent 100% UV protection. This is what protects your child’s eyes – not how dark the lenses look.
Some sunglasses for kids also have polarised lenses. This can be a very good solution if your child often spends time near water, at the beach or in bright surroundings where glare can easily be uncomfortable. Polarised lenses reduce glare and can make it more pleasant to stay outside for longer. For everyday use in the garden, at the playground or on the way to and from nursery or school, non-polarised styles are often perfectly fine too, as long as the UV protection is reliable.
If you are unsure, you can prioritise like this:
Children need sunglasses that do not feel stiff or fragile. That is why lightweight and durable materials are a clear advantage. Polycarbonate lenses are popular because they are both light and more resistant in everyday use. Frames made from flexible materials are better able to handle being taken on and off many times and often feel more comfortable against a child’s face.
In everyday life, this simply means that the sunglasses are nicer to wear and easier to move around in. It makes a difference when they are used at the playground, on holiday, in the car or during other hours spent outdoors. For water play and beach trips, sunglasses can also easily be worn together with swimwear and lightweight swim sandals, so your child is well dressed for sunny days.
It is also worth remembering that children’s sunglasses are not simply adult sunglasses in a smaller size. They are usually made with lighter materials, smaller frames and a fit that is better adapted to a child’s face.
For many children, the look of the sunglasses matters too. Some prefer simple, understated styles, while others love round shapes, sporty details or colours they find fun. Here you will find unisex designs, baby sunglasses, classic styles and children’s sunglasses that suit different preferences for both girls and boys.
The best choice is usually the pair your child will want to put on again the next time the sun shines. Once fit, protection and comfort are in place, the look can be the final detail that decides the choice. That makes it easier to find sunglasses for kids that are actually used in everyday life – not just a nice pair waiting to be worn.
