Equipment

Equipment for children, storage and everyday organization

Here you will find equipment for children that can help create more calm, order and overview in everyday life. These are practical solutions for storage, organization and all the little things that make family life run a bit more smoothly – in the kids’ room, in the hallway and in the areas of the home where toys, clothes and everyday essentials quickly pile up.

For many parents, children’s equipment is not just about putting things away. It is just as much about making daily routines easier for both children and adults. When storage works well, it becomes easier to keep track of small items, sort toys and create solutions that the child can also understand and use independently. If you are unsure where to begin, it can be helpful to start with your child’s age, where the equipment will be used and exactly what you need space for.

If you want to create a better connection between play, storage and interior style, you can also coordinate your equipment with toys and solutions for the kids’ room, so everything fits naturally into your child’s everyday life.

Which children’s equipment suits your child’s age?

The need for storage and equipment changes quickly as your child grows. For the youngest children, soft and simple solutions often make the most sense. Baskets, fabric storage and equipment without sharp edges are practical in everyday life because they are easy to move around and can be used in different rooms.

When children are around 3-6 years old, independence becomes more important. Toy baskets, low shelves and clear divisions often work really well, because the child can more easily help with tidying up. It helps when the system is simple and easy to understand – for example, one basket for cars, one for creative supplies and one for soft toys.

For older children, the need often becomes more specific and requires more space. Bags, shoes, hobby items and things for leisure activities usually need larger bins, shelves or dedicated zones, so everything does not end up everywhere. In the hallway, it can also be practical to supplement with backpacks and other storage, so your child can quickly find their things when the day begins.

Storage for children should be easy to use and easy to clean

Storage for children needs to withstand everyday use. Durable materials and surfaces that are easy to wipe clean and pleasant to display make a big difference. Plastic or acrylic bins are often a good choice if you want something simple to clean. Fabric baskets create a softer look and work well in rooms where you want a calm atmosphere. Wooden solutions with fabric bins fit beautifully into a Nordic-style kids’ room and often feel like a natural part of the interior.

It is also worth looking for details that make it easier for the child to use the storage independently. Handles, easy access and stable solutions can make a big difference in daily routines. Open storage or a transparent front makes it easier to see what belongs where, and it can save time – especially on mornings that are already a little busy.

If the equipment will be placed near the changing area, bathroom or wardrobe, it makes extra sense to choose materials that can be wiped clean again and again. Here, it can also be useful to gather practical items around, for example, changing mats or other fixed places in the home where the day often starts and ends.

Kids’ room organization works best when you start small

It can be tempting to try to solve all clutter at once, but it often works best to start small. In the kids’ room, the simple solutions are usually the ones that last the longest. Start with 3-4 storage units and a few clear categories. This makes it easier for both you and your child to maintain the system.

A good starting point could be:

  • one basket for favorite toys
  • one for creative supplies
  • one for larger pieces or building blocks
  • one for things that are used less often

If you do not have much space, wall-mounted solutions or stackable bins can be a great help. They free up floor space and make small rooms more flexible. It can also make sense to divide storage across several rooms instead of keeping everything in the kids’ room. Some items naturally belong in the hallway, some by the changing area, and the rest where your child plays the most.

The most important thing is not to have as much storage as possible, but to choose what actually works in your home. Too many boxes and baskets can quickly make everything feel more confusing. Often, the simple solution is the one that continues to work in the long run.

Toy baskets, labels and zones make tidying up more manageable

Toy baskets are among the most useful pieces of equipment in homes with children, because they can easily be adapted to age, room and need. For children over 3 years old, labels with text or small pictures can make it easier to tidy up independently. When children can see where things belong, tidying becomes more concrete and much easier to take on.

It can also help to divide the room into zones. A reading corner, a creative area and a space for free play make it more natural to store things where they are used. This way, the equipment becomes a helpful part of everyday life rather than just something that takes up space.

If you have many small items, it can be smart to combine large baskets with smaller compartments. Creative materials can, for example, be gathered close to drawing and painting supplies, so your child can more easily take them out and put them away again.

Choose equipment that can grow with your family

The best equipment is often the kind that can be used for several years and moved around as needs change. Baskets in different sizes, modular solutions and storage that works in more than one room give you valuable flexibility in everyday life with children.

A child’s needs change quickly. What is first used for nappies and small essentials can later become storage for books, building blocks, dress-up clothes or school bags. That is why it is worth choosing solutions that do not only suit the present moment, but also make sense later – in the kids’ room, living room or hallway.

At House of Kids, you will find equipment selected with a focus on function, durability and everyday family life, where things should be easy to use. This makes it easier to create systems that truly last – even on busy days.
